ANN FITTON b. 1842: Died aged 15 weeks of smallpox at Oxford Rd., Macclesfield West.

CHARLES FITTON b. 1808: 1830 - marriage by banns, he a cotton spinner of Maccesfield. He signed his name. Occupation
between 1830 and 1850 is a cotton spinner.
Residence between 1838 and 1845 is Oxford St., Macclesfield. 1841 census -
1851 census - 41 year old labourer married to Elizabeth, residing Lowe St., Macclesfield with mother, Mary,
who is by this time widowed, his surviving sons, Matthew and Edwin, his brother Peter, and nephew David.
Charles and Elizabeth sailed to NZ on the "Canterbury" to NZ with their two sons, Matthew aged 6 years and
Edwin aged 1 year. They were in steerage under "free and assisted" passengers. The Canterbury was a brand
new ship of 970 tons, when she came out to Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand. She sailed from the East India
Docks in London on the 18th June 1851 and arrived on the 18th October under the command of Captain Edwards
with 143 souls. She carried a sixteen ponder cannon, sometimes used to salute ships coming into port.
The next mention I find of Charles is in 1853 when he is a labourer in Governor's Bay (just around a few small
bays from Lyttleton Harbour. His name joins other persons qualified and liable to serve as jurors within the
province of Canterbury.
