One Besly in 1543 at Calverleigh near Tiverton.
Please, if you have published trees of these families online - can you update/correct them.   I have done a lot of transcription corrections on the census copies on Ancestry.com so you can now see these for yourselves when searching for elusive family members. Cheers.

"There is a glimpse of a Besley firm specifically concerned with printing broadside ballads in Robert Thompson's thesis on the broadside ballad trade (1975) in a list of stockists of such sheets and of ephemera who had set up in places like Birmingham, Coventry and Bristol at some stage near to the end of the eighteenth century.2  The Besley concerned must have been Thomas (born 1760) though by 1816, according to the Exeter street directory, there were two Thomas Besleys in operation, father and son, the elder at Bell Hill (later called Bell Hill, South Street) and the younger in the High Street.  Henry, another son, born in 1800, was taken into partnership by his father - Thomas senior - in 1825 until 1834 when the partnership was apparently dissolved and the father died; after which the firm printed under Henry's name until 1872 and as Henry Besley and Son between 1873 and 1897."

              Besley, Robert (1794-1876)

"Civic activist and Lord Mayor was born in Exeter on 14 October 1794. Here he began his business life in his
father’s shop where, as an apprentice, he learned the skills of printing.  It was here too that his brother managed
the Devonshire Chronicle as a newspaper of West Country Liberalism. These two elements - printing and a
Liberal politics - would inform the rest of his business and civic activities.

In 1820 he joined the firm of Messrs. Thoregood, typefounders, based in Fann Street, where he later became
head. Other interests included Chairman of the Scarborough and Whitby Railway Company and Chairman of
Griffin’s Wharf. In 1854 he began his representation of the Aldersgate ward on the Common Council and from
1861 to his death he was Alderman. By 1864-5 he was Sheriff and in 1869-70, Lord Mayor. In between he was
Governor of the Queen’s Anne Bounty and of Stone lunatic asylum. He died at Victoria Road, Wimbledon Park
on 18 December 1876, and was buried at Battersea cemetery."

"Robert Besley (1794–1876) was an English typographer, creator of Clarendon (typeface) in 1845 and the Lord
Mayor of London in 1869.

Besley joined the Fann Street Foundry in 1838. The Fann Street Foundry was also home of
typographer William Thorowgood, creator of Grotesque. When Besley created Clarendon he had it patented,
as England just passed a bill allowing that. The typeface became so popular, though, that the copyright was
soon broken by people creating knock-offs. Still known as the first Registered typeface.  He then went on to
become Sheriff of the City of London in 1863 and the Lord Mayor of London in 1869."

Opposite this tablet a drinking fountain was erected in 1878 in memory of Robert Besley Esq. Alderman of this ward and Lord Mayor of London, 1869 - 70. Removed 1934.
The Corporation of the City of London EC1, Aldersgate Street, 107.

Robert’s business career started in the family firm where like his brothers, he served his apprenticeship to acquire his knowledge of print management. It is also undoubtedly where he learnt the other company principals of partnership, integrity and possibilities, principals that would also inform his business and civic achievements.

It was ambitious possibilities that took the young Robert to London, joining The Fann Street Foundry in 1820 where he would later became head. As a printer and typographer Robert had a huge influence, creating the popular Clarendon typeface, which in 1845 became the very first typeface to be registered.
As a man of business, Robert Besley became Chairman of the Scarborough and Whitby Railway Company and Chairman of Griffin’s Wharf. But it was arguably as a civic activist that he made his greatest contribution, serving in such roles as Governor of the Queen’s Anne Bounty, set up to support the incomes of poorer church clergy.

And then, following a year serving as Sherriff of the City of London, Robert Besley became Lord Mayor in 1869.
Robert finally past away in 1876 at his home in Wimbledon Park, having reached the grand-old-age for the time of 82.
